Introduction#

The only [[TODO|grammatical category]] exhibited by [[TODO|adverbs]] in [[./index|Modern Greek]] is [[TODO|degree]].

Formation#

Positive Degree#

The positive [[Adverbs#Degrees|degree]] of many [[Adverbs|adverbs]] is formed from the [[Adjectives#Positive Degree|positive degree]] of a corresponding [[Adjectives|adjective]].

Most [[Adjectives|adjectives]] in -ος, -η / -α, -ο, in -ύς, -ιά, -ύ and in -ης, -α, -ικο have a corresponding [[Adverbs|adverb]], which is equivalent to their [[TODO|neuter]] [[TODO|nominative]] [[TODO|plural]] and thus ends in -α.

Some [[Adjectives|adjectives]] in -ος, -η / -α, -ο have an alternative [[Adverbs|adverb]] formed by adding the suffix -ως to their stem. Such [[Adverbs|adverbs]] derived from [[Orthography and Phonology#Accent|proparoxytone]] [[Adjectives|adjectives]] become [[Orthography and Phonology#Accent|paroxytone]]. In some situations, there is no difference in meaning between the two variants, but in many others this difference is significant.

[[Adverbs|Adverbs]] are formed from [[Adjectives|adjectives]] in -ης, -ες by adding the suffix -ως to the their stem. The [[Orthography and Phonology#Accent|stress]] remains on the same [[Orthography and Phonology#Syllabification|syllable]] as in the [[TODO|masculine]] [[TODO|nominative]] [[TODO|singular]]. However, the [[Adverbs|adverbs]] formed from [[Adjectives|adjectives]] in -ώδης are [[Orthography and Phonology#Accent|oxytone]].

[[Adverbs|Adverbs]] are formed from [[Adjectives|adjectives]] in -ύς, -εία, -ύ by adding the suffix -έως but are formal and rarely occur in spoken language.
